Colin Hunsley – Commercialisation Director

Colin has an outstanding track record for generating substantial revenues from Intellectual Property enabling ClearViewIP to create tangible value for our clients.

Working with clients to help them identify value in their technology and IP is one of Colin’s favourite activities. It enables him to use his experience of Technology Transfer and patent litigation to accurately assess how the value can be realised. With early stage technologies this will involve all the strands of market assessment and product development whereas more mature IP can often be traded for immediate value. Having identified the value, he has a flexible approach for working with clients; from doing it all for them, to training and coaching their own staff to achieve success in this difficult field.

Before joining ClearViewIP, Colin was Senior VP Technology Commercialisation at BTG where he led the Physical Sciences team. Recognised for his team management skills and patent expertise, he was responsible for revenues of $100m from 2005 to 2007, realised through either licensing, litigating or selling patents in the US and Japan. Colin’s experience spans all stages of the licensing process including settlement of litigations.

Colin is a Chartered Engineer and has a BSc. in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College, London. He regularly presents on Licensing for a range of organisations including Falconbury, Kaplan Hawksmere, IEEPI (France), Licensing Executive Society and Praxis.

“Why
invest in IP?”

“I am frequently told that it is not worth investing in IP especially patents. I always disagree as I have experienced the value patents can bring to an organisation.

It is a challenge to invest in Patents, but that is even more reason to do it wisely. Not doing so may be fine if you aim to stay small, but if you have ambition, ensure you have strong IP!

We spend a lot of our time helping companies fix problems that would not be there if they had a good IP capture program in place early on. I should not complain as it provides plenty of work but it always seems such a lost opportunity!”
