Merry Christmas and an IP New Year!

The Story
We’ve been looking to find you the most inspired Christmas IP to get you in the festive mood. Here’s a rundown of our favourite findings:

Christmas stocking, puppet and story media combination (US5389028) describes a stocking and storybook combination, perfect for telling cherished Christmas stories!

Santa Claws (CA2114854) describes a new way of making sure your pets don’t feel left out. While all their owners get stockings to fill with gifts, the patent gives details of a Christmas boot for pets, that can be hung up and filled with gifts so those furry friends don’t miss out on the festivities.

Santa Claus detector (US5523741) answers that age-old question regarding when Santa actually came to your home and gave you your presents. Placing presents in the stocking will trigger sensors, and in turn, illuminate a light source letting you know you’ve been given something!

Nokia Piggybacking its way to Success?

Nokia deal may get them back in the game

The Story
Having been the dominant force pre-smartphone, Nokia struggled to compete with apple and google and have since changed hands many times and even gone down the route of selling non-smartphones again in a bid to capture some retro appeal. However, they have always had strong IP, and as such have had success with licensing. For example, signing a cross-license with Xiaomi last year and, this month, a deal with up-and-coming Chinese phone maker Oppo.

Why it Matters
Just because they fell behind in sales, doesn’t mean they fell behind in R&D and the fact that Nokia is having success with licensing, especially with new and up-and-coming smartphone firms shows this. Deals like this can strengthen their footing as a force in the mobile market, and could help them rise back up, and there’s even news of them marketing a large portfolio of assets in 2019 to help make money from their IP. Nokia is one to watch in the future.
