SYDNEY – ON, Australia’s national sci-tech innovation accelerator program completed their most recent three-month session in which 11 participating teams took their current research and collaborated with business mentors to move their ideas to potential business ventures. Established by CSIRO in 2015, ON specialises in assisting researchers from the fields of science and technology working on projects that have the potential for commercial application. One of the largest benefits for participants is access to mentors with business development experience who can help guide scientists and researchers from idea to actual business product.
For this program, mentors are selected from various fields and industries to provide commercial guidance to teams participating. For example, Chhavi Bhandari, an IP Consultant with ClearViewIP, a leading IP strategy and consulting firm recently served as a mentor and will be continuing her participation in the next ON Prime session. She will also be assisting with the evaluation of applications for this program. As an Innovation Mentor, she supported participants as they progressed through ON’s Lean LaunchPad business model validation process and helped teams to think about their Intellectual Property position and strategy early on in their start-up journeys.
Mentors for the program come from various fields and backgrounds including business leaders, tech specialists, entrepreneurs, finance specialists and IP strategists. “Serving as a mentor was a wonderful experience,” shared Bhandari. “Helping scientists convert their great discoveries into real life solutions and commercial propositions was really rewarding.” The program focuses on bridging the gap between research and commercialization to assist scientists in taking their ideas to market. “The highlight for me,” continued Bhandari, “was to see the transition that the teams underwent in just 3 months – From idea-centric thinking to customer problems and solutions centric thinking.”
