The Annual Conference for the Licensing Executives Society Britain & Ireland chapter (LES B&I) took place at the Royal Over-Seas League in London last week. ClearViewIP have a long-standing relationship with LES, however this event was particularly significant for our Commercialisation Director Colin Hunsley as it was his first appearance in his new role as Vice President of LES B&I .

Colin was invited to chair the opening panel of the conference, entitled ‘Successful Deal Making Experiences’, much to his delight given his own interest and success in generating substantial revenues from the commercialisation of intellectual property. Colin was joined on the panel by ex-colleague Roger Harrison whom Colin had worked with at BTG. Roger, who prior to the Bayer takeover worked at Algeta, provided insight into how value was created by the successful Norwegian company. Colin and Roger were also joined by Kevin Mutch of Faberg√©, who spoke about the brand development of their iconic name, and Jeremy Carmichael of Astex Pharmaceuticals who shared his experiences to help the audience understand the roller coaster of financing rounds.

Colin was also invited to participate in a further panel in the day: ‘Exploring the Role of IP as a Business Asset’, where patent valuation methods were a hot topic. Colin said of this panel: “It is probably one of the most interesting sessions on patent valuation I have been involved in: of particular interest was the perspective of insolvency approaches to realising value from IP and the concept of using IP as loan collateral.”

It has been a great year for Colin so far as alongside his recently disclosed Vice Presidency, it will soon be announced that he has once again been recognised as a leading international IP strategist by his appointment to the IAM300 for the fourth consecutive year, alongside Managing Director, Jon Calvert.

In his new role as Vice President, Colin hopes to reach out to the current and next generation of technology and licensing experts and encourage more technology companies to participate in events to further grow and influence the LES community.
