After 3 packed days of seminars, meetings and expert panels, the IPBC 2012 has drawn to a close for another year, marking the end of a fantastic and successful event for the hosts Intellectual Asset Magazineand all who attended. I was honoured to be asked to speak on one of the panels and where better to partake in such an opportunity than surrounded by global IP leaders in the glorious sunny setting of Cascais, Portugal.
The IPBC (IP Business Congress) is the annual event for leaders in the intellectual property industry to attend topical seminars and debate on current IP issues affecting the industry in a series of panels that run throughout the event. Speaking on one of the closing panels on the topic of ‘The Strategic Route to Success’, I was pleased to be joined by Isabel Morgado, Board Member Responsible for IP and Innovation Policy at BIAL, Marshall Phelps, Vice President of Article One Partners and Marnie Williams, Group GC & Company Secretary at Unitised Building Pty, all highly respected IP professionals. The highlight for me was seeing the approach Unitised Building Pty has taken to introduce IP leverage into the construction industry, a quite unique proposition which no doubt will bear fruit and is in stark contrast to the mobile phone battleground we all seem to live in.
The panel was moderated by Jackie Maguire, CEO of CollerIP and fellow INTIPSA co-founder, and despite the brilliant sunshine outside and the farewell cocktails by the poolside calling (and in my case an imminent flight), the debate was very well attended and the discussion was lively – thanks Marshal!
Aside from the panel, I had the opportunity to meet with a number of existing clients over the three days, as well as talking to new contacts about membership and sponsorship of INTIPSA, the International Intellectual Property Strategists Association. INTIPSA officially launched at IPBC last year and IPBC 2012 was a great time to reflect on the association’s achievements and get useful constructive feedback from members and prospective members.
With such a packed event of seminars and panels, myself and Josue Ortiz, Senior Consultant at ClearViewIP, did our best to attend as many of the talks as possible. Even with the early starts and very late nights we both thoroughly enjoyed the event!
